Frequently Asked Questions about the Heads of Schools Program 

Who is eligible to apply?

Current heads of independent and international schools who are remaining in their position are eligible to apply. Given the goals of the program, we do not accept applications from departmental or division heads, such as upper school head. We also do not accept applications from leaders of charter schools.

When does the program meet and for how long?

The program will meet Sunday, January 23, 2022 through Friday, February 4, 2022 at Teachers College in New York City. Participants must attend all days of the program.

How do I apply?

Applications for the Heads of School program are completed through the Teachers College Non-Degree Programs application process. For detailed information, please see the Application Process & Deadlines page for the program. Applications are submitted online through the Teachers College website. There is an application fee of $65 USD.

What is the admission deadline?

The application for the January 2022 cohort will be due May 15, 2021.  To be notified when the application becomes available, please complete the Contact Us form and specify Heads 2022 as the program of interest.

What is a fellowship program? Are scholarships or financial aid available?

A fellowship is a merit-based scholarship. All accepted participants receive a fellowship that covers the costs of tuition and accommodation and some rewarding social events. Meals, travel to New York City, and daily transportation to and from Teachers College are not included.

Is housing available?

The Klingenstein Center provides accommodations in a New York City hotel for the cohort participants.

When will I be notified of an admission decision?

Admissions decisions will be available in June. Applicants will need to log in to the application system to view decision letters.

Are there special requirements for international applicants?


  • International students must hold the equivalent of a U.S. baccalaureate degree in order to be eligible for admission to Teachers College. Any transcripts for degrees earned outside of the United States must be submitted for an equivalency evaluation via either WES or ECE.  Please see the Teachers College application instructions for international students for detailed information. 
  • Applicants whose undergraduate degree was from an international institution where the language of instruction was not English are required to achieve a successful score on the TOEFL or IELTS exam.

May I submit letters of recommendation?

Yes. You may submit letters, but they are not required for this program. We do require you to provide the name and contact information of one member of your administrative team who can serve as a reference should we contact them.

Is an interview a required component of the application?

An interview is not required.

Why am I applying to Teachers College?

The Heads of Schools Fellowship is a non-degree program of Columbia University's Teachers College and participants are awarded 3 graduate credits for participation. Applications to the program are made through Teachers College and must meet requirements of the college.
